Max at full speed
For the first little while, the kids randomly blew off steam kicking a couple of soccer balls around, then the "coach" organized a game of "Octopus" (a variation of Freeze Tag) with Max as "It". That's what he's playing in the picture above, where he looks more like an airplane than a scary sea monster. Then they played a game of "crazy soccer", which consisted of two teams but also two balls, to really keep the action going:
After that was done, the organizer got Max to choose teams...
...and then he brought out these hilarious oversized balls to roll around:
The kids played a couple of different games with those huge balls, but in both cases the main action involved rolling the ball down the gym floor and either around or into the net at the other end. Any excess energy these kids had pretty much dissipated during this game, which was good, because a sugar rush was just around the corner.
A feast for a king!
The place and Max's parents put on quite a spread. There was pizza, fruit with chocolate dip and two kinds of Starbucks coffee. There were copious amounts of popcorn and a working Slushee machine with two different flavours which you can just make out at the far end of the table in this picture. There was an unlimited supply of pop, there were chopped veggies, there was....there was....hmm. I feel like I am forgetting something important.
Happy birthday to Max!
Oh, that's right. There was cake. And not just any cake....
Spidey sense tingling...
...a Spiderman cake. Favourite of both the birthday boy and his Dad! For a few moments, most of the people in attendance sat relatively still, so I took a couple of family shots:
And then it was back into the gym for some more activities. First they played a musical-chair-style game involving a decreasing supply of gym mats; then it was time for Max to demonstrate his Gangnam Style moves...
...and help his team win a tug-of-war against the parents:
Put your back into it!
Max seemed to have a fantastic time at his party and I'm really glad we got to tag along. His brother, Charlie, had a blast as well, but his brand-new sister, Georgia, slept all the way through it...
...until the very end:
Georgia and Mom
She woke up just in time to meet her Auntie Shirley and Uncle Ron for the first time:
And then, at the end of all of that action, I took what turned out to be my best three shots of the day:
...and about to blow!
It was right at that moment I remembered I had to get home to cook brunch for my kids, so it seemed as good a time as any to leave!
Happy Birthday, Max! Thanks for inviting us to your party!
